Happy Holidays!

Did you ask Santa for a book this Christmas?  Reading is a great day to help wind down at the end of a hectic day over the break.  Be sure to visit your public library for some great choices this holiday season.

School library books should be returned by now.  Mrs. Schmidt has a number of new books to add to the collection in the New Year as well as exciting news about plans for our annual Family Literacy Day celebration being held in late January 2011!

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Hackmatack-nominated Author Philip Roy was here!

Students in grades 4-6 enjoyed a visit with Philip Roy today.  Mr. Roy read from his latest book "River Odyssey" and entertained us with some unpublished stories as well.  Grades 4 & 5 took part in writing workshops and received autographed book marks.
Grade One students caught a glimpse of Mr. Roy's folk art that he had brought along and just had to check it out as well.  Where else would you see a submarine made out of 50 pairs of wooden crutches?
Our library has all three books of the Submarine Outlaw series including an audio copy of Submarine Outlaw.  We eagerly await the fourth book to be published!  Thank you Mr. Roy for visiting Tatamagouche Elementary.

Frances Wolfe was here to visit!

Students in grades P-3 enjoyed presentations by author/illustrator Frances Wolfe on Friday November 19.

Not only did we enjoy her storytelling, it was great to meet Bunny and Teddy, characters in "the Little Toy Shop" and see the transformation from sketch to painting to book.

WOW Reading Challenge

Our school has partnered with the Adopt-A-Library Program and local RCMP and we are taking part in a reading challenge.  The WOW Reading Challenge was created to encourage children to read regularly by introducing a friendly competition between schools around the world.  The overall goal is to shine a spotlight on reading.

The challenge starts this week and ends in April 2011.  Staff and students will keep a log of all books they read at home and at school.  Each class will report totals to Mrs. Schmidt each week.  These totals are entered online and we will be able to track our success online through the Adopt-A-Library website.

For students reading longer books, it is best to log the number of pages read as 100 pages = 1 book read.  Visit http://www.fightingcrime.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=64  for more information.
